Here I am attaching an activity I did with my students to assist them with their writing skills. This was for Spanish III and we were working with vocabulary of professions and the use of the Subjunctive. I used the writing strategy RAFT presented in the book "When Kids Can't Read" so my students could write a paragraph in Spanish. It was good that I did not need to change the letters for the strategy RAFT which stands for Role, Audience, Format, and Topic. In Spanish, it read Rol, Audiencia, Formato y Tema. Students worked in groups of two, and created a Google document that they shared. When it was ready, they shared it with me, and I gave them feedback the first time by using "Comments" in Google document. Students then checked their paragraphs and made the corrections for a second submission, and then I gave them a grade. I was working with points and I scored this assignment on 10 points, 1 point per sentence. I asked them to write from seven to ten sentences. I could see the different levels of learners, and students could make a choice. If a student could write only seven, he or she was able to get complete credit.

Querido diario,

Ahora tengo un descanso de mis deberes. Estoy muy contenta de que elijo ser un astronauta. Yo deseo que mi familia esté orgullosa de mí. Sé que arriesgo mi vida pero me gustan las emociones. Es sorprendente que esta muy tranquila en la luna. No es cierto que el espacio tenga extranjeros. Necesito mucha valentía cuando viaje a la luna y no estoy seguro de que todas las personas puedan viajar a la luna. Sin embargo, yo recomiendo que muchas personas visiten la luna porque es una experiencia maravillosa. Me alegro que yo tenga esta oportunidad. Yo espero tener esta oportunidad de nuevo.

Querida Rosa,

Hola mi querida, yo quiero estar contigo mucho.   No me gusta dejarte porque tú eres perfecta. Mi trabajo de piloto es muy difícil.  Mi trabajo manda que yo viaje a muchos lugares.  Ojalá que yo te visite a ti y a nuestra familia mucho.  ¿Como está Manuel? ¿Y Julio?  Yo deseo estar en las vidas de mis hijos pero es difícil en este trabajo.  Ojala que mis hijos estén bien porque el tiempo vuela.  Pero, mi trabajo es para mi familia, y es muy divertido.  Es divertido porque yo puedo volar a muchos lugares.  También para este trabajo, necesito ser más dedicado, comprensivo y amable.  Hay muchas personas en mi vuelo y es mi trabajo proteger a todos en el avión.

Probably you have observed some small mistakes but what I enjoyed is that my students were able to be creative and they expressed their ideas coherently. This kind of activity give them confidence to write in a second language.
